I’ve been thinking about life a lot lately. Tragedy will do that to you. Both in my private practice and the community in which I live, I’ve been reminded of just how brief a time we have on this earth. Over the past 12 months, tragic, “out of time” deaths have caused me to face this reality in new and different ways. As a result, the following thoughts from a few years back carry even more weight and meaning. Allow me to share these thoughts with you.
Life is so very fragile and short . . . Even the longest life on this earth is but the very beginnings of a single breath!
In light of this profound truth, I urge you live each day more self-aware than the day before:
- In a kind-hearted manner toward all you meet
- Forgiving of those who wrong you (in order to free yourself from the tyranny of revenge)
- Extending grace toward those who find themselves lost in fear and regret (even if that one in need of grace is you)
- Embracing the pain as well as the joy
- Learning to love your self more completely so that you may better “love your neighbor in the same way you love yourself”
- Extending yourself – with all your imperfections, foibles and misgivings – into the world with hopeful abandon.
For in so doing, you may just discover the meaning of life.
Peace!
