Day Two Hundred Thirty of 365 – The Lakota Code of Ethics: The Nature of Negative Energy

Almost every Belief System has a proverb that addresses the Nature of Negative Energy. Whether that energy is expressed in thought, word or deed, the Nature of that Energy is the same. We get what we give! What goes around, comes around. You reap what you sow. Each statement carries the sense of the circular nature of life.

The Lakota Code of Ethics addresses the concept of Karma as well. They refer to this experience as Negative Energy. This particular part of the code says: Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.”

Very little needs to be said beyond this statement. The Lakota believe and therefore live according to this code. The negative energy released into the universe will not only return to the sender but will do so with great abundance.

On a personal level, the message is clear. We have all likely experienced a certain amount of karma in our lives. We have all experienced positive and negative returns on our investments in people, relationships and endeavors. And yet, I believe that there is an even bigger picture that must be presented when considering the Nature of Negative Energy.

Let me repeat the Lakota Code: Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.”

I want to apply this to those who venture to lead us. Whether they be president of our country, legislators, governors, judges or lawyers, this principle applies to them. Whether they be educators, spiritual gurus, corporate leaders or non-profit experts, this principle applies to them. The strange thing . . . perhaps the scary thing here is . . . when the principle applies to them, the people under their leadership are directly affected as well. And therein lies the rub!

I fear that we have become a bit callous to the antics of our leaders. We often allow ourselves to be victimized by their often self-serving, myopic and misguided decisions. I’m not saying that all of our leaders are this way; however, more than I care to acknowledge make a living (and a reputation) out of Negative Energy. Whenever leaders – people in power – send negative energy out into the world, the boomerang effect can be disastrous. Not only do they receive the negative benefits, we the people, receive them as well.

We must expect more of our leaders. We must demand more of our leaders. We must stand up to our leaders. We must do these things consistently. We must always be on our toes. We must avoid allowing ourselves to lulled into calling good, bad and bad, good. We must avoid giving in to the pressure to obfuscate the truth. We must demand courage from our leaders. We must demand dignity and integrity from our leaders.

Why you ask? Because “The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.”

Peace!
