Free Will! If you grew up going to church you likely heard quite a bit about the concept of Free Will! Now don’t check out on me just yet! I’m not taking this thought in the direction associated with those teachings! I’m taking it in another!
One of my favorite authors is Dean Koontz and one of my favorite characters to come from his brilliant mind is a guy by the name of Odd Thomas. In his latest Odd Thomas installment entitled “Deeply Odd,” Mr. Koontz says this: “Our free will creates our future.”
I found that brief sentence profoundly intriguing. We are free to choose to pursue or attempt or do whatever we wish! The caveat is that whatever we choose as a result of that Free Will serves to create our Future!
Now let’s look at this another way. If that statement is true (and I believe it is) then where I am today – the future that was only a possibility yesterday – is a result of the exercise of my Free Will in preceding days!
In a real sense I am living in a world that I have created! When I strip away all the excuses and justifications and deflections related to the state of my life today I am left with the exercise of my Free Will as the driving force for the life which I now live.
Free Will! I wonder what might happen if we truly examined its power as we respond to life? Perhaps we would become more mindful in its use. Perhaps.
