ADD – We all know what those letters stand for . . . Attention Deficit Disorder! We all know that in the simplest terms it refers to difficulties staying focused. We also know that it applies to children and adults alike.
What if ADD is more serious – more pervasive than we believe it to be? And . . . what if it means more than we think it does?
As a therapist I see clients every day who suffer from ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder; however, this version has nothing to do with difficulty focusing. It has to do with people experiencing a Deficit of Attention from the most important people in their lives.
Children and Adolescents suffer from a Deficit in Attention from their parents – REAL attention! It seems that parents find themselves stretched and stressed on every front and often substitute things/activities for TIME with their children. They mistakenly think that by keeping their children busy they are giving them what they need. Children – children of all ages – need our TIME our Attention if you please!
I see the same in adults. Spouses, Partners, Siblings, Lovers, Friends all need Attention from those they love. And all too often the gap between intent and action grows wider leaving an Attention Vacuum and we all know that Nature abhors a vacuum. People do as well. That is one reason adults seek to fill that gap with people, activities and substances that are detrimental to their well-being.
Dedicating a little time each day for those we love is not an impossible task. It doesn’t take all day either! I’m betting that you would be amazed by what investing even 10 minutes of focused time with your children, your spouse, your partner or your friend can do for both of you!
Join me in my quest to stop ADD – the kind that requires a little TIME.
Peace!
